Jeremiah 17:7–8
7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, And whose hope is the LORD.
8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.

Edward Mote penned these words “My hope is built and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.” The foundation of the Christian life remains solely in Jesus Christ and His sacrifice.

Jeremiah wrote, “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD.” Back in 1989 the movie “Batman” came out. It featured Jack Nicholson playing the role of the Joker. At the end of the movie the Joker was in a parade throwing out money and making false promises yelling out to the crowd, “And now, folks, it is time for ‘Who do you trust!’ Hubba, hubba, hubba! Money, money, money! Who do you trust? Me? I’m giving away free money. And where is Batman? He’s at home washing his tights!”

The question for us today is, “Who do we trust?” Do we trust Satan or God? Satan offers deception and chaos, lifts up false promises, and leads people into moral corruption. Satan destroys everything.

Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 11:3, “But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.’ There are false teachers. Not all false teachers stand behind a pulpit, many are found in the congregations of churches leading people away from God with lies and deception.

Churches can lose their focus. Instead of focusing on Jesus they focus on the minutia, the minor things in the church. The focus of the church must be Jesus. Jesus is the Cornerstone of our faith (Ephesians 2:20). Jesus is the source of our salvation. Jesus said in John 14:6 that He was the way, the truth, and the life.”

Where are you placing your trust?
