Worship
Romans 12:4–5 (NKJV)
4 For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function,
5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.
The church. So many thinks of the church as a cold, stagnant building. Some think of the church as a worship service. The building is where the church meets. The worship service is the act of the church coming together for believers to express love, gratitude, and thankfulness to God. The following sentence is not mine, but I like it. “During this time, our eyes shift away from our own problems as we recognize the greatness of God.” Worship is not about us; it is all about God. The focus is not the music, nor the message brought by the pastor, the focus is God.
Whether through singing, prayer, or Scripture reading, true worship is about expressing reverence, adoration, and devotion to God. When a person thinks or says, “I got nothing out of the service” then it speaks more to that person’s attitude or expectation of the service than the service itself.
My focus in this writing is verse 4. We as Christians are members of one body, the Body of Christ. The church is composed up of the Body of Christ. We come together in a worship service to corporately worship Christ. The focus of the worship service is Christ not self.
We need the church. We need corporate worship. Paul says in verse 5, “so we, being many, are one body in Christ…” When people visually see us, they see one body. What they do not see are all the parts of that one body. Each one in that one body is important. No one person is more important than the other.
So, back to the worship service. It is all about God. When we come together to worship it is God, Jesus Christ, we are worshiping. I am thankful for the music of worship, the instruments played, the testimonies shared, the sermon preached. But we must remember it is all about Jesus.
Romans 12:16 (NASB) “Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation.”
