John 21:
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.
18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.”
Have you ever failed in following Jesus? We all have. Have you sinned in your Christian life? We all have! Have you ever come to the point you just feel like you cannot make it as a Christian?
By asking Peter three times, “Do you love me?” Jesus gives Peter the opportunity to reaffirm his love and commitment to Him. Just as God restored Peter, gave him a purpose, and equipped him to lead, God has a unique plan and purpose for each of us. Even when we feel unworthy or uncertain of God’s call in our lives, His grace and guidance can transform our lives and call us to something greater than we could ever imagine. (Parenthetically speaking I ask God has He made a mistake in calling me.) Peters journey is a powerful reminder that our mistakes do not define us—they can be steppingstones to fulfill God’s plan.
It is inspiring to think about how each of us plays a role in God’s story. How do you see this truth shaping your life right now?
There is a transformation occurring in my life that is looking not to the past but to the future. How is God using the events in my past to help me become more of what He has created me to be?
How is God using your past to help you become more of what He has created you to be? Think the positive thoughts of God. Let go of self and let God do His perfect will in your life. God has an amazing plan waiting for you to take hold of.
