Psalm 27
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked came against me To eat up my flesh, My enemies and foes, They stumbled and fell.
3 Though an army may encamp against me,
My heart shall not fear; Though war may rise against me, In this I will be confident.
David’s declaration “The Lord is my light and my salvation.” What more do we need? God is our all in all! David had an unwavering trust in God’s guidance, deliverance, and strength. His faith was not shaken by the external threats because he knew God was His protector.
4-6 “One thing I have desired of the Lord, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, And to inquire in His temple.”
The one thing David desired was to be in the presence of God and to “dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of his life.” Growing up, and of course when I was old enough, I would walk to the church and sit in the sanctuary, go to the piano and play one note at a time singing the songs of praise to God. David expresses a heartfelt longing to dwell in the house of the Lord. His desire was to behold the beauty of God and to seek Him in His temple.
The days of our youth. I was not old enough back then to allow the things of this world to interfere with my worship of God. Growing older the powers of worldly evil have pounded down and tried to steal away the worship of God and maybe sometimes the evil has won, but because God has had an overwhelming presence in my life, the evil has not won. In verses 7-12 David moves to a tone of appeal in prayer asking God to hear his cry and not to hide His face. David knew he needed the presence of God in his life. We have enemies. The number one enemy is Satan. As David depended on
God’s mercy and guidance; we to need to depend on His mercy and guidance in our lives.
David knew his hope had to be in the Lord. Without God he would have lost hope. Our encouragement is in the Lord. We should not move without God’s command to move. I remember my Old Testament professor, Dr. Page Kelley, teaching on Isaiah 40:31. It has since been what I have tried to do. “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
In verse 27 David writes “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord.”
