Hebrews 2:1–4 (NKJV) — 1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed
to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2 For if the word spoken
through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience
received a just reward, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a
salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was
confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4 God also bearing witness both
with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit,
according to His own will?
PAY ATTENTION TO GOD’S WORD AND OBEY IT!
We must not ignore or neglect our salvation! If our salvation is neglected, we
will slip back into the lifestyle we once lived. More spiritual problems are
caused by neglect. If we are not growing in our faith, we are not just sitting
idly by but are rusting away in our spiritual growth. The foundation of the
Christian life is Jesus Christ. He does not change. He does not move. Paul
writes in 1 Corinthians 3:11 “For no other foundation can anyone lay than
that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” Jesus is the foundation of our lives.
He is the Solid Rock.
How do we neglect our salvation? We ignore God’s Word the Bible. We do not
spend time with God in prayer. Our private time with God is no longer a
priority. When we stop meeting with God individually in prayer and study of
His Word then publicly we stop meeting together with other followers of
Christ in worship and Bible study.
We must give more earnest heed and attention to our salvation. There are
168 hours in a week. If we go to church each week it is at most for many
people 2 hours. Do we leave the other 166 hours void of God? Do we put
more emphasis on the things of the world?
We must give EARNEST HEED to God, His Word. We are to hear the Word of
God, we are to listen to, hold on to, and stick fast to God and His Word.
Have you ever noticed how a parent and a child walk with each other? At
first you see the parent carrying the child. Later in life the parent is typically
holding onto the child’s hand. The parent is guiding the child in the direction
he should go. As the child grows older you see the parent and child walking
together but not holding hands. As time goes on the parent/child
relationship grows apart. The parent is still there but the child moves on.
The parent yearns for and covets those times they can spend together in a
loving relationship. We may at times wonder what happened to our relationship with God. The anchor holds, is steadfast. If there is a drifting away it is not because God has moved. It is because we have not “earnestly heeded to the things we have heard.”
