Exodus 20:14 (NKJV) — 14 “You shall not commit adultery.
Over 50 years ago I was a teenager. I thank God…praise God that He was a
part of my life. He guided me putting me in places to hear godly, Christian
men speak and deliver the Christian witness I needed to hear. I was not the
most adept at doing the right thing to bring success. The one big thing I did
have was God. I went to a city-wide youth rally as a teenager and listened to
an old preacher. He slowly ambled up to the pulpit with his cane. I cannot
remember his name, where he came from, or why he was there. I do not
remember what else he said. I do remember this one thing that has
influenced my life. He said, “Pray that God leads you to the person He wants
you to marry. Do not date anyone whom you would not consider marrying.
Do not marry a person who is not a Christian” (Being old now and many
decades past these words may not be exact, but they are the essence of
what he said.) I took this seriously.
God takes marriage seriously. God created Adam and from Adam, Eve. The
first union between man and woman. Genesis 1:27–28 “So God created man
in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He
created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful
and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the
sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the
earth.”
The first union between man and woman took place with God at the center
of the union.
How far we have fallen! Marriage is a sacred institution. How many are living
together without being united in marriage. The sanctity of marriage is
stressed in Malachi 2:14–16 “Yet you say, “For what reason?” Because the
LORD has been witness Between you and the wife of your youth, With whom
you have dealt treacherously; Yet she is your companion And your wife by
covenant. 15 But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the
Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. “Therefore take heed to your
spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth. 16 “For the
LORD God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one’s garment
with violence,” Says the LORD of hosts. Therefore take heed to your spirit,
That you do not deal treacherously.”
Marriage is a contract, a covenant between ONE man and ONE woman for
life. It is a contract which also involves God and witnessed by others.
Marriage IS A SACRED INSTITUTION where God is the center of the union.
America has fallen! I wish I had the room to write my thoughts on this
commandment. It would take a book to do so. God takes marriage seriously.
God created three great institutions: The family, The church, and the
government. Sin has destroyed all three. There is hope that is found only in
God.
This is the lie we tell ourselves and dooms us: Malachi 2:17 “You have
wearied the LORD with your words; “Yet you say, “In what way have we
wearied Him?” In that you say, “Everyone who does evil Is good in the sight
of the LORD, And He delights in them,” Or, “Where is the God of justice?”
We are in the middle of God’s justice and our eyes are witnessing a “Post
Christian” America. There is hope for America and the family but it is only
found in God!
