Lamentations 3:22-23 “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
These verses highlight the steadfast love of God even during difficult circumstances. Individually and as a nation we will go through difficult times but because of God’s “great love” we will not be consumed. It is through God’s mercy, “not our strength, that we survive the trials of life. We go through difficult times. Some are our doing, while others are beyond our control.
Life can beat us down! But Because of God’s love for us we are not consumed. I am reminded of Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
Romans 8:28 (“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God…”) and James 1:2-4 (“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds…”) affirm the transformative power of trials. They refine our faith, draw us closer to God, and help us rely on His strength rather than our own.
“Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed” reflects and acknowledges that it is by God’s mercy, not human strength, that one survives trials.
The mention of God’s compassions being “new every morning” emphasizes His unending and fresh grace. Every day brings renewed hope, demonstrating God’s reliability and unwavering faithfulness, as affirmed in the words, “Great is your faithfulness.”
In the context of Lamentations, where the writer mourns the destruction of Jerusalem and the suffering of its people, this verse stands out as a declaration of trust in God’s character despite the surrounding devastation. It serves as a reminder to believers of the hope found in God’s consistent and loving nature, even during life’s most challenging times of life.
Again, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
