Daily Devotion (August 13, 2024)

1 John 1:5–7 (NKJV)
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

By nature, God is light. God’s very nature is light. Wherever God is there is the splendor, the brilliance of light. Why? Because God is light.

Wherever God is there is light. The darkness disperses. Wherever God is the darkness of Satan is revealed. The Light of Jesus reveals the holiness, the righteousness, the purity of God. Satanic darkness leads to confusion. The light of Jesus guides us out of darkness. It is only through the Light of Christ one can walk out of the darkness of satanic evil.

In a worship service you can tell where the Light shines. There is spiritual warfare. Satan distracts. Distraction comes in many forms. It may be a wandering mind that drifts off into unrelated thoughts or a preoccupation with insignificant concerns. It may be distractions of noises, movements or even the modern technology of cell phones or other electronic devices. It could even be a boring monotone preacher reading his sermon.

John writes, “If we say we have fellowship with Him and walk in darkness…” The mind of a Christian can drift. But! The true believer in Christ does not allow the drift to be permanent. Jesus, the Light, guides us out of darkness. We cannot find our way out of darkness with out Christ leading us. Without Christ we walk in the darkness of satanic influence.

Two important points of this passage. First, the true believer in Christ does not continue to walk in darkness. When the follower of Christ starts to drift into darkness the Holy Spirit will guide the believer back to the light, John 16:13 “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”

Paul writes in Ephesians 1:18, “the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.”

Do not allow the darkness of satanic influence to destroy the joy of your salvation. Focus on the Light of Jesus.
