Daily Devotion (July 23, 2024)

Colossians 2:6–7
6As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,
7rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

A mighty oak tree starts as a small acorn. Great things often have humble beginnings.

The Christians life begins with the acceptance of Jesus. In the same way a small acorn can grow into a mighty oak tree, the Christian can grow in Christ. In the same way an oak tree is know for its strength and stability the Christian’s faith is known by its being rooted in God through faith. The faithful believer in Christ is taught the Word of Christ and abounds in his faith with thanksgiving.

The Candler Oak Tree is located in Savannah, Georgia. It is estimated to have been growing since the 1700’s. The largest tree in Georgia is in Palmetto. It is a red oak with a diameter of 10 feet and estimated to be 350-450 years old.

How does the Oak Tree grow so large? The tree develops a substantial canopy and robust root system.

How does the Oak Tree compare to the Christian life? The lifespan is compared to the timeless knowledge and teaching of the Word of God. The oak tree represents strength and righteousness found in the Bible. The oak tree’s longevity symbolizes wisdom and eternal life. The oak tree is seen biblically as a symbol of knowledge, understanding, strength, firmness, and power. (https://lotustryo.com/oak-tree-symbolism-spiritual-message)

Having seven large Oak Trees in my yard this comparison interested me. There is a lesson learned about our roots and growth. The Christian who develops a strong root system will grow into a large and strong follower of Jesus Christ.
