1 John 1:1–5 (NKJV)
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life—
2 the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us—
3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.
4 And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
We live in a world filled with spiritual darkness. Misery, despair, trials, and tribulations surround us everywhere we go.
John wrote an important letter for us today. From before the foundation of this world Jesus was. He did not have a beginning. He was not created. He was the Creator of all things. Jesus knows what is on the other side of life. We can trust the word of Christ.
We need the Word of God. The One who is Truth. It is Christ who knows who we are and why our existence on earth is important. Spiritual darkness is pervasive in the world. It fills the lives of anyone who has not accepted Christ. It is an eternal reality for those who do not have Christ in their lives. It is spread like a virus groping in the spiritual realm. There is only one cure, Jesus.
The only answer to fight off this dreaded spiritual disease has already been fought. Jesus is the answer. He fought the battle and won the war. His death, burial, and resurrection were the victory. Jesus is the victory. He is the light of the world. It is only Jesus who can cleanse us from the darkness of sin.
John writes in verse six, “If we say that we have fellowship with Him and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” I thank God my salvation was secured in Jesus when I committed my life to Him years ago. Each day I recommit my life to Him. There is an army of fellow Christians walking around us. If we are walking in the light of Jesus we are then attracted to other followers of Christ. We desire to have fellowship with each other. We are continually being cleansed through the blood of Jesus. We choose of walk in the light of Jesus. (1 John 1:7)
