Colossians 1:9–10
9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.
I love to eat. There are times I get hungry so I eat. My body craves food so I eat and get full, but my body is still craving food. I’m hungry. Spiritually the same is true. I can fill my spirit with spiritual knowledge but what “spiritual knowledge” am I filling it with? If all I eat is “junk food” my body is not getting the nutrition it needs to fully function and be healthy. There was a time when my body was wider than it was tall. I would eat but never be satisfied. This can be true spiritually.
There are those who feed their spirit the empty spiritual calories thinking they are obtaining the knowledge of God. They get a spiritual high on the empty calories of false knowledge. They know about God but they do not know God.
Paul wanted the Colossian church not to just know about God but to know God. He wanted them to “be filled with the knowledge of His will.” Paul wanted them to be filled to overflowing with God’s will. The idea is, what is God’s will and purpose for our lives? God does not just want to be a part of our lives when we are in a worship service. He does not want us to feast on His word just for an hour on a Sunday morning. God wants us to know and digest His Word, His will, every moment of every day.
I grew up starting every day with a good, nutritious breakfast. Almost every day it was the same breakfast. I did not leave the house feeling empty. I still eat the same breakfast. I have never become bored with it. It is filling. This is true with the knowledge of God. It never gets old. It stays with us.
God does not want us to just know His will. He wants us to be filled with the knowledge of His will. As we eat the physical food used throughout our body, we are to eat the spiritual food of God. Putting the wrong food in our body leads to what happened to my body some years ago. I almost died. Putting the wrong spiritual food in our minds can lead to the same in our spirit.
To repeat: GOD DOES NOT WANT US TO JUST KNOW HIS WILL, HE WANTS US TO BE FILLED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIS WILL.
